April 25th Update: Upcoming events and what's new with Phoenix IWOC

This was a good week for the Phoenix IWOC. We were able to raise a number of stamps during our first stamp/envelope drive that took place this week during the Nueva Ola zine release in Tempe. We thank the organizers and hosts for accommodating our efforts at this event. We were also able to send in a number of letter's to the AZ DOC, as well as increase coordination with other West Coast IWOC branches. We look forward to future collaboration with our new contacts.

Finally, we held our 3rd letter writing/organizing meeting this past Sunday at Fair Trade Cafe in Downtown Phoenix. A 4th event has not yet been scheduled, but will likely come after Mayday weekend. Please follow our Facebook page to keep updated on these events, but we will post about them here as well.

This coming week, we will be conducting 2 more stamp/envelope drives to support Phoenix IWOC's efforts. The first will be at The Space for their Mayday/1 year anniversary event, and the second will be at the Backslider/Humiliation/Saintbreaker/Dayak Mayday show in Phoenix. We wholeheartedly thank Alec for setting this up for us.
Additionally, the Free Alabama Movement has called for a month-long work stoppage beginning May 1st. They have called for Solidarity actions around this.

Going forward, we can always use more contacts and we hope to expand our collaboration efforts with different community organizations in the Valley. While material donations of stamps and envelopes are important and greatly reduce the cost of Phoenix IWOC's correspondence efforts, we are always looking for volunteers and organizers. We are also looking for as many outreach opportunities as possible, so if you are open to letting Phoenix IWOC table and discuss the prisoners struggle, please reach out. We also have a number of texts we would like to translate to Spanish, so if you can lend translation skills, they are invaluable to us.

If you are interested in contributing to our efforts, shoot us an email at Phoenix.iwoc@riseup.net or leave us a message at (480) 296-3106

The Phoenix IWOC

The Phoenix Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee (Phoenix IWOC) is a branch of the national IWOC which is affiliated with the radical labor union, the IWW. (Industrial Workers of the World) Members of the IWW have created the IWOC, the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee, which functions as a liaison for prisoners to organize each other, unionize, and build solid bridges between prisoners on the inside and fellow workers on the outside. We formed based on a general callout for support for the Texas Prisoner strike which began on April 4th, and will compound with a strike by the Free Alabama movement on May 1st, and a national strike on September 9th, the 45th anniversary of the Attica prison rebellion.

We are based in Phoenix and periodically host letter writing events, organizing meetings, and benefits to support the efforts of IWOC, both locally, and nationally. When we have events, we will post about it via this blog.

To join, donate, refer us to someone on the inside of AZ DOC who may wish to be contacted, or otherwise support our efforts, we can be contacted at phoenix.iwoc@riseup.net or (480) 296-3106.
